Every rider can lift a downed motorcycle.

Every rider is almost certainly going to drop their motorcycle at some point. The 2010 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Limited weighs about 900 pounds when filled with gas and oil, but don't let that weight scare you. Picking up a downed motorcycle is all about leverage and can easily be done if you know what you're doing.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

    • 1

Rotate the handle bars on the fallen motorcycle down so that the front of the front tire is pointed towards the ground.

    • 2

Stand next to the seat and turn around so that you are facing away from the motorcycle. You will be using your buttocks against the seat to "push" of the motorcycle into an upright position.

    • 3

Squat down and sit against the seat so that your buttocks are pressed firmly against the seat.

    • 4

Grab the handle bar hand grip which is touching the ground with one hand. With the other hand, find a secure handhold on the rear lower portion of the motorcycle such as under the top luggage rack, rear highway bars, or any solid part of the motorcycle that gives you a solid grip.

    • 5

Start lifting the motorcycle with your leg muscles by keeping your back straight and your head up while you begin walking backwards into the motorcycle. Take very small steps and you will feel the motorcycle start to lift.

    • 6

Continue taking small steps, pushing your buttocks into the seat, lifting the motorcycle. At first it will feel very easy but about one third of the way up you will start to feel the weight of the motorcycle on your leg muscles.

    • 7

Stop lifting as soon as the motorcycle is vertical to avoid flipping it over on its other side.

    • 8

Set the kickstand and put the motorcycle in gear.

    • 9

Check for damage or spilled gas which may have leaked out while the motorcycle was down.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the kickstand is on the top side the fallen motorcycle you can set it up before you start lifting which will also prevent the motorcycle from going over center and falling on the opposite side.

  • The soles of your boots must have traction on the ground to safely lift your motorcycle. Loose gravel, leaves, rain, oil are things to really watch for as you do not want to lose traction in the middle of lifting your motorcycle.

  • Use caution on uneven or sloped ground as the motorcycle may start to roll away from you as it is lifted up.
