How to Install Harley Brake Pads

How to Install Harley Brake Pads

Harley-Davidson uses disc brakes on all of the bike models, so the method for installing brake pads is going to be the same on every bike. The only difference between models is going to be saddlebags, fork covers and exhaust concealing the calipers. The calipers mount to a frame that goes over to top of the rotor. Two brake pads are on the inside of the caliper. On some Harley models, you may need special tools the remove the saddlebag or other components.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Allen wrench set
  • Harley brake tool
  • Replacement pads
    • 1

Loosen the bolts on the rear of the caliper using the corresponding Allen wrench. Pull the caliper off the rotor.

    • 2

Pull the two brake pads from the inside of the caliper. Place the brake tool inside the caliper so that the metal arm is on the piston.

    • 3

Turn the handle on the brake tool until the metal arm forces the piston into the caliper. Remove the tool from the caliper. Insert the new brake pads into the caliper so that they are in the same position as the old pads.

    • 4

Place the caliper onto the top of the rotor. Line up the mounting holes on the caliper with the holes on the frame around the rotor. Tighten the bolts on the rear of the caliper.
